Just because you don’t have room in your kitchen for a six-burner stove, double-bowl sink or Sub-Zero fridge, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice function or style.

Storage is one of the most important elements in a small kitchen. By maximising every spare centimeter, reorganisingareas that don’t work as hard as they should and adding extra solutions where necessary, you can turn a tiny room into a spacious kitchen.

Concealed kitchen are growing in popularity

Minimal kitchens are all about discarding clutter and cleverly concealing what’s left. Limited space and improvements in storage solutions have paved the way for clean, minimalist kitchens that you hardly know is there. A completely concealed kitchen can be a practical option for anyone with a smaller layout as well as homeowners with spacious kitchens. From fold-away doors, sliding doors and hidden drawers to Alexa and Google voice activated tambour doors there are many ways you can keep clutter out of sight in your kitchen.

Disappearing Act: Fold-Away Doors and Sliding Doors

In order to save space, sliding track doors conceal sinks, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, ovens, and induction ranges when not in use. For large and small spaces, behind the fold-away door it is possible to find a perfectly functional mini kitchen, tricked out in high quality materials. While it’s gorgeous to look at even when open, the kitchen disappears completely when the doors close.

In this case, cabinets, drawers and electrical appliances are hidden behind an electronic panel.  The kitchen front is fascinating not only because of its unique functionality, but also because of its natural rust coated design. At the touch of a button, the kitchen front panel lifts to show the worktop with shelves, an extractor hood and integrated lighting.

Go minimal

As the world starts moving away from excess, you might have thought about going minimal with your new kitchen. A kitchen stocked with essentials – everything you need and nothing more.

Why didn’t we think of that? Roller Shutters

A kitchen renovation can be a big investment, and while you don’t want to follow every trend out there, FBS Profilati offers a functional alternative.

Roller Shutters are highly efficient door systems which can be used in numerous applications both horizontally and vertically. Roller shutters simply spell elegance, shout functionality and can easily become the focal point of your kitchen. They leave your kitchen transformed and reward it with the luxury of space. The range ensures easy workability, smooth motion and unhindered access to the storage items while you work.

When compared to sliding or hinged doors, as well as with other tambour products, our systems offer numerous advantages:

  • Practical – Full access to cabinet contents.
  • Functional– Smooth, quiet operation.
  • Space-Saving– Doors do not open out into the work area.
  • Unique Design– Endless possibilities for cabinet sizes, designs and finishes.
  • Reliable– No swelling or sticking with humidity.
  • Durable– A polymer-based formula resists scratching better than hot stamped or foiled tambour products.
  • Versatile– Can be used in both new and retrofit applications.

It’s all about refreshing your cooking space.

Planning your dream kitchen? Whether your current kitchen layout needs renovating or you simply want to refresh a tired colour scheme, now is the perfect time to create the kitchen of your dreams. But what’s cool in the world of kitchen design?

As the hub of all activity, the kitchen is evolving to make living and cooking as efficient as possible while looking aesthetically impressive. Matt Phillips, head of UK operations at Rotpunkt, believes furniture will be‘defined by difference’ with a mix of standout finishes and materials to identify different pieces of furniture and to create zonal kitchen schemes that are not restricted by four walls or customary layouts.

Meanwhile, the experts at Cosentino talk about the idea of the ‘anti-kitchen’. The kitchen is still a space to love and cherish, but one that can be easily hidden away so as not to impose on a luxurious living area.

So with this in mind, here are some of the biggest and emerging trends for the year that will help you plan your dream kitchen.

The Trendiest Kitchen Colors for 2019 Are Definitely Not What We Were Expectinghttps://www.coastalliving.com/homes/decorating/2019-kitchen-trend-colors

  1. CLEVER, CONCEALED STORAGE

There’s a trend in concealing key technology pieces such as induction hobs, coffee machines, smart appliances and food gadgetry. This even extends to moveable work-surfaces, pull down units for unreachable spaces, hidden wall panels and retractable doors.

Tambour doors and hidden drawers are not just extremely versatile in enabling you to discreetly tuck away a huge variety of appliances, even complete utility rooms, larders and wine cabinets, but also maximises every available space,’ explain the team at Chamber Furniture.

‘I believe technology will inevitably play a key role in the future of kitchen design,’ says Daniele Brutto, co-founder of Hub Kitchens. ‘For example, TM Italia currently has a kitchen that is controlled via a desktop application, so the tap rises and falls at the click of a button, the sink lid opens and closes on demand and the fridge doors can be opened without even touching the door. I’m sure this type of software technology will be the future for kitchen designs to coincide with the evolution of modern lifestyles.’

  1. Coloured CABINETRY

Many people are beginning to incorporate coloured cabinets in kitchens while moving away from all white cabinetry. Making a statement and creating a mood with cabinetry, like using deeper grey-washed blues and greens in high demand. These are being beautifully paired with fixtures and hardware in brass and other contrasting metals.

  1. SOPHISTICATED IN ANTHRACITE

It has been reported a sharp increase in orders of anthracite kitchens, reflecting the trend for using darker colours in the home, and Matt at Rotpunkt notes that searches for black and dark colours are up 93% in the last six months.

‘2019 interior colour trends will embrace the darker colour palette, showing fewer primary colours and a greater emphasis on black and anthracite which is contrasted by rich coffee browns, shades of grey, taupe and biscuit beige,’ Matt explains.

  1. BESPOKE STORAGE

Ceiling height cupboards and tall units with overhead cabinets offering reams of additional storage are a big trend, says Andy Briggs, interior designer at Optiplan Kitchens.

‘Multifunctional and hidden storage will be an essential feature for both compact and large kitchen in the coming year and the demand for bespoke storage is expected to rise,’ says Joanne Emery, marketing manager at Burbidge.

  1. REEDED GLASS CABINETS

Open shelving and glass-fronted cabinets allow homeowners to showcase their personalities with displays of quirky objet d’art.

‘Reeded glass will be everywhere this year,’ reveal Papilio. ‘This finish adds a wonderful layer of texture to space, a great tool for the kitchen to mix up all those straight lines and smooth surfaces. The reeded effect works well with natural materials. Plus the glass is semi-opaque so you reveal a glimpse, not the entire contents beyond.’

Joanne at Burbidge also speaks of ‘pretty and practical glass fronted dressers and cabinets’ making headway in kitchen design. ‘These stylish solutions allow decorative items and crockery to be beautifully displayed behind glass; adding a visual and personal touch to a contemporary kitchen,’ she adds.

  1. SINGLE-SLAB SPLASHBACKS

Splashbacks are no longer resigned to just being practical elements – now, designers are using them to create real focal points in the kitchen.

Similar to how you would paint or wallpaper a section to create a feature wall in your living room, Cosentino predicts a growing demand for single slab splashbacks as opposed to standard tiling in the kitchen. Elegant and simple, a single slab is not only stunning but ‘offers practical cleaning benefits as grouting between tiles can be difficult to keep clean’.

  1. SUSTAINABILITY

Developments in design and an increased focus on sustainability means the need for quality furniture that is environmentally friendly remains a priority for many, and Matt at Rotpunktsays we’ll be seeing durable materials and designs continue to grow in popularity.

For Ikea, Bold Sustainability is a trend that celebrates bold and striking environmentally-friendly interiors, highlighting how sustainable living can still allow for personal expression with standout designs that use recycled or reclaimed materials.

  1. SLEEK MINIMALISM

Sleek, minimalist, streamlined and pared-back are buzzwords to look out for because of this year space, clean lines and long stretches of uncluttered surface is a key, desired look.

‘One of the most enduring kitchen trends this year which we predict to extend long into 2019 is the uncluttered streamline industrial style,’ says Chamber Furniture. ‘The timeless appeal of pared-back and seamless uncluttered working areas will continue to be in vogue with each kitchen proving to be as practical as aesthetically pleasing.’

Functional and cool design by Karim Rashid

Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 40 countries attest to Karim’s legend of design.

Karim Rashid, Egyptian, is an industrial designer. Karim’s touch expands beyond product to interiors such as the Morimoto restaurant, Philadelphia; Semiramis hotel, Athens; nhow hotel, Berlin; Università Metro Station, Naples as well as exhibition design for Deutsche Bank and Audi. Karim’s work is featured in 20 permanent collections and he exhibits art in galleries worldwide.
He is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences globally disseminating the importance of design in everyday life. He holds Honorary Doctorates from the OCAD, Toronto and Corcoran College of Art & Design, Washington. Karim has been featured in magazines and books including Time, Vogue, Esquire, GQ, Wallpaper, and countless more.

“FOR THE LONGEST TIME DESIGN ONLY EXISTED FOR THE ELITE AND FOR A SMALL INSULAR CULTURE. I HAVE WORKED HARD FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS TRYING TO MAKE DESIGN A PUBLIC SUBJECT.”

Karim Rashid: Functional Design for Rastelli

The unique style of Karim Rashid distinguishes the Kook model, by Rastelli, a monobloc kitchen that can be combined with side columns and display cabinets.

Thanks to Kook, the Egyptian designer has achieved another success, with a kitchen that is both futuristic and functional, certainly with expressive impact, but also created with the utmost attention to ergonomics. Kook made its way into the circuits of international markets and today it is a complete product, able to “survive trends”, as Rashid himself explains.

From your point of view, what features should a cooking zone have and what design criteria should be used?

In my kitchens I pursue a minimalist approach, favouring essential surfaces with a strong visual impact, emphasized by shots of bright colour.

Kitchen furniture does not have a large turnover, compared, for example, to mobile phones or some accessories. As a result, it is always better to go for a well thought-out and ergonomic design that will survive the latest trends.

What is the concept on which Kook is based and how is the cooking zone organized in this project?

For the Kook kitchen, I aimed at an innovative design to transform even the most demanding culinary challenge into pure aesthetic pleasure.
As the cupboard opens, it offers a wide view of all that is available and, when closed, it makes the kitchen minimal and tidy.

Great attention is paid to the principles of neatness and cleanliness, fundamental rules in the kitchen, which in Kook’s design immediately stand out: the worktop includes motorised shutters which, once opened, show an integrated hood and a series of glass shelves enlightened by LED lights. The inclination of the upper part of the cabinet is designed to encourage the storage of larger accessories at the top and those that are less bulky or more frequently used at the bottom, making the time of cooking a moment of relaxation.

The lower part of the cabinet, with pressure opening, is highlighted by strips of coloured LEDs.

Lastly, Kook offers a sink that can be hidden by covering it with a cutting/tray in the same finish, to create a seamless surface.

How important is technology in Kook’s concept and what elements communicate it?

Technology applications in the house, especially in the bathroom and the kitchen, are rapidly evolving. In my opinion, the most outstanding of all the innovations, from sensors to LEDs, are the touch controls. Unfortunately, as far as shapes and uses are concerned, I think that the design of the kitchen sector gives too little importance to the ergonomic feature, to the point that styles, shapes and materials outweigh functionality, practicality and usage. With kook, I used the opposite concept.

We found plenty at  Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan, Italy

The Villa Necchi Campiglio is a wonderfully accomplished and luxurious example of Italian architecture of the inter-war period.

When Piero Portaluppi designed The Villa in Milan between 1932 and 1935, he was already a well-known professional accepted and appreciated within the ranks of wealthy industrial Lombard society. It was precisely here just a short walk from Piazza San Babila, that the architect demonstrated an exceptional openness to modernity, leaving the decorative style of the previous years in order to embrace the emerging rationalism movement.

The high standard of living of the owners who were well-known as a result of the production of sewing machines, can already be seen in the garden, large enough to accommodate both a tennis court and a swimming pool. Inside, in the rooms it is the quality of the materials that reflects the wealth of the owners, as demonstrated by rosewood paneling, brass fittings and nickel silver inlays on the doors. The furnishings specifically designed by Guglielmo Ulrich also appear sophisticated and well cared-for and are partly still in place.

In September 1910, he graduated in architecture and was awarded the gold medal prize, which the Association of Engineers and Architects of Milan used to award to the best graduate of the Polytechnic.
